📅 2025 Festival Schedule

This year, the festival will take place over three days from August 3 (Sat) to August 5 (Mon).

■ What is Gontansai?

Gontansai is a traditional celebration honoring the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane, a historical scholar and statesman revered as the deity of learning.
Held at Hofu Tenmangu, said to be Japan’s oldest Tenmangu shrine, the event has deep cultural significance and is a cherished tradition for the local community.

■ Festival Highlights (2025)

Date Highlights
Aug 3 (Sat) Opening day with mikoshi (portable shrine) parades and lively food stalls.
Aug 4 (Sun) Traditional performances including sacred music and dances.
Aug 5 (Mon) Spectacular fireworks display in the evening!

■ “Evening of Lanterns” – A Magical Lightscape

One of the most enchanting features of the festival is the “Evening of Lanterns”, held every night during the event.
Approximately 2,000 lanterns (bonbori) line the stone steps and the path from the main torii gate, turning the area into a glowing river of light.

The soft glow of candlelight illuminating the stone stairway offers a peaceful, dreamlike atmosphere.
It’s a beautiful contrast to the lively daytime events—a unique blend of stillness and celebration.

■ Fireworks – The Grand Finale of Summer

On the final night, August 5, a brilliant fireworks show will light up the sky around Hofu Tenmangu.
This is the perfect way to savor the last moments of summer with family, friends, or a special someone.

Viewing tips:

  • You can enjoy the fireworks from various spots nearby, including quieter locations if you prefer to avoid crowds.

  • Be sure to stay hydrated and bring sun protection, as daytime temperatures can be quite high.

■ Discover the Local Charm

Gontansai is more than fireworks—it’s a vibrant celebration of local culture, history, and community.
With street food stalls, local music, and smiling children, the festival is a heartfelt invitation to experience the warmth of Hofu.

For visitors from outside the area, it’s a rare chance to truly feel the spirit of a local Japanese festival.
